His parents fought so much He lied to enlist Figured war was better than home He was lucky and he didn't die Like so many that he'd known When his hitch was up he was at loose ends He didn't belong anywhere So he floated like A leaf on the wind It was the start of The Reckless Years The Reckless Years When he lost hope The Reckless Years Full of booze and dope Sometimes he'd forget Things that he'd done He was taking medicine And calling it fun So to make ends meet He did catch as catch can He was always good with his hands Drifted from town to town For a week there was a wedding band Went to New Orleans He'd heard anything would go It was fast living while taking things slow Time passed in a tropical haze Day into night. night into day The Reckless Years When he lost hope The Reckless Years Full of booze and dope Sometimes he'd forget Things that he'd done He was taking medicine And calling it fun He had this pain deep inside It started in his back And went down his thigh Doctor told him he was out of time He'd had his last hurrah Spent his last dime When he got the news He felt a relief He didn't have any religious beliefs Maybe heaven or maybe hell No way to know, no way to tell The Reckless Years When he lost hope The Reckless Years Full of booze and dope Sometimes he'd forget Things that he'd done He was taking medicine And calling it fun

Kinda The Same He wasn't always right He wasn't always wrong Wasn't always week Wasn't always strong Didn't want to go work everyday Most always did it anyway He wasn't straight wasn't always high Always told the Truth unless he told a lie Loved the mountains But he missed the sea He thought that's the way it oughta be Him and me We're kinda the same Nobody's right No one's to blame He doesn't care what others say He just goes on about his way Cheap beer was good enough Had nice cufflinks in his French cuffs Like travelling but usually stayed home He's a homebody who likes to roam Ate fruit and vegetables everyday Except when he only ate cake Liked his coffee black and hot But he usually drank tea from a china pot Him and me We're kinda the same Nobody's right No one's to blame He doesn't care what others say He just goes on about his way Thought he was handsome But he was ugly as sin Didn't look in mirrors so it didn't bother him His pockets were empty But he didn't care He always felt like a millionaire He loved rock and roll Except for the beat Was a real smooth dancer with two left feet Hated movies but Loved sitting in the dark Crazy about fish except for sharks Him and me We're kinda the same Nobody's right No one's to blame He doesn't care what others say He just goes on about his way

Skin Deep 04:50
Walk down any street on any given day look at the people you pass along the way the blessed and the broken the mighty and the small there's one thing that's true about them all Beauty's only skin deep but good and bad goes down to the bone yes beauty's only skin deep and good and bad goes down to the bone History's worst villains look like you and me some go to work and church some have Ph.D's can't tell by looking whose got the Devil's mark it's not until they act that you see what's in their heart Beauty's only skin deep but good and bad goes down to the bone yes beauty's only skin deep and good and bad goes down to the bone Sometimes you can tell a man by the cut of his clothes by the company that he keeps or the way he tells a joke everybody travels through life in their own way some pass in the night some make another day Beauty's only skin deep but good and bad goes down to the bone yes beauty's only skin deep and good and bad goes down to the bone

Gun Rag 04:02
This ol' boy down the road named Bert He's as down to earth as dirt He's always there to lend a hand You couldn't ask for a better neighbor Comes when needed sooner than later All in all, he's a real good man Most things we see eye to eye We'll shoot the bull over coffee and pie And talk about everything under the sun One thing I don't understand Is why such an upstanding man Is obsessed over having so many guns I went over to his house one day He had 'em all out on display Pulling them out of boxes and bags Dozens and dozens of all kinds All different sizes and designs Cleaning them up with a gun rag Boxes and boxes and boxes of ammo The house catches fire it'll go kabamm-o There'd be a hole in the ground Like an atom bomb There's enough bullets to fight a war When I asked him what for He said he might need 'em down the road Something about when "They" take over It ain't gonna be a stroll through the clover It'll be a fight just to survive I asked him just who they are He said I ain't sure but there'll be a war I'll need all these guns just to stay alive Now please don't misunderstand At 12 years old I was on a deer stand And I shoot paper targets at the range But if you're going hunting with a 30 round mag Then the deer must be shooting back I find it all kind of strange If the country's going down the drain I'm afraid we gave it away To a bunch of millionaires and their gangs We got caught up in their lies While they took away our rights And now we're all scared but we don't know why Now this isn't the end of the story My heart still quickens when I see Old Glory But we are in interesting times I confess Nowadays folks scare too easy Maybe it's time to turn off the TV And tune out the talking heads and their mess All I'm saying is ask why And wonder if the answer's a lie Just who's coming out ahead from all these guns Gun Rag, Gun Rag Somebody's cleaning up with this gun rag Gun Rag, Gun Rag somebody's cleaning up Somebody's making a buck Cleaning up with a Gun Rag

Square Pegs 03:01
Square Pegs Jim Pharis You and me are two of a kind one's vineger the other's wine we're like two peas from the same pod we're a set even and odd We Rarely see things eye to eye we disagree a lot but hardly ever fight bought a car with two steering wheels somehow you know just how I feel CHORUS You and me are two square pegs and life is a round hole no matter how they pound on us square into round just don't go We've been known to bicker and fuss hitting ain't allowed and we hardly ever cuss they said we would not last we're still here, who's got the last laugh I'm getting creaky and grey but you look better every single day keep you're chin up, don't be afraid let's love each other 'cause the ends on the way CHORUS You and me are two square pegs and life is a round hole no matter how they pound on us square into round just don't go BREAK CHORUS You and me are two square pegs and life is a round hole no matter how they pound on us square into round just don't go I guess we're growing up at this late age it really doesn't seem all that great I remember you and me Walking under the old oak trees They said we're too different to last long guess we've proved people all wrong we're like two peas from the same pod we're a set even and odd CHORUS You and me are two square pegs and life is a round hole no matter how they pound on us square into round just don't go

In for a dollar, in for a dime Now you've done it You've crossed the line It's too late to turn back now Words out of your mouth Like bullets from a gun It doesn't matter how fast you run You can't get them back now CHORUS You say you're the smartest Person that you've ever met Your huffing and puffing Looks like a fish on the deck Aces are wild you've got a jack in the hole Your self importance makes you bold Your ego's like a gorilla on your back It pains me to a large degree That you spend so much time with me Your presence is a pain in the pants CHORUS You say you're the smartest Person that you've ever met Your huffing and puffing Looks like a fish on the deck The day will finally come When I get from under your thumb Hosanna's I'll sing What a party there'll be When that day finally arrives I'll be thankful that I'm still alive I won't miss you But you'll sure miss me CHORUS You say you're the smartest Person that you've ever met Your huffing and puffing Looks like a fish on the deck

Sometimes I get a feeling of deep and dark despair I feel hollow down to my very core When I get that way there's only one thing that can help Lord, I wish that there was more CHORUS Golden whiskey in a glass of melting ice Old friend whiskey pays my sad souls price When things get dark and bleak there's only one thing I want to do I drink whiskey when I get the blues With each sip my mind begins to calm Each little sip is like a soothing balm I know tomorrow will bring a hard hard price to pay But I need help just to make it through today CHORUS Golden whiskey in a glass of melting ice Old friend whiskey pays my sad souls price When things get dark and bleak there's only one thing I want to do I drink whiskey when I get the blues Some people try to tell me how I should live my life They say drinking whiskey will take a hard. hard price They say I should pray to the heaven up above But I wouldn't if I could. So I'll go about my day to day routine Take care of business like nothing will ever change But now and then a feeling will come over me And I know just what I've got to do CHORUS Golden whiskey in a glass of melting ice Old friend whiskey pays my sad souls price When things get dark and bleak there's only one thing I want to do I drink whiskey when I get the blues When things get dark and bleak there's only one thing I want to do I drink whiskey when I get the blues

about

I recorded this album of original music in the manner of some of the artists that influenced me the most. Artists like Leo Kottke, Mississippi John Hurt and John Renbourn. One guy playing guitar and singing.

I hope that you enjoy this music and the simple no-frills approach that I took.

"Central Louisiana native, Jim Pharis, is an incredibly unique blues musician. On eleven original tracks, Pharis talk-sings about several subjects that concern him in today’s postmodern world. His flat, somewhat nasal vocals and sketchy grammar might bother some people, but his fingerstyle guitar work is excellent." Laura Sedor, Elmore Magazine
